Rock Climbing in Erie, PA

Well, the real question: Is there any rock climbing in Erie, Pennsylvania??

The non-definitive answer: No.

I am still on the lookout for something. There is a cliff on Walnut creek in Asbury Woods that looks interesting, but I'm fairly certain that it is dirt/rock and not any good for climbing. There is also a falls there called Moonraker? moon something falls where a stream dumps into Walnut Creek. It is extremely beautiful but if the water runs year round then that is not a possibility. however, if the water drys up and stops; then it might be possible to climb... the only problem being that it will be extremely smooth.

I am excited to scout out Panama rocks. From what I have searched for, there is not a lot of climbing done there. So we'll have to see when it opens in May. I'm also anxious to check out McConnell Mill state park: however that is 1.5hrs away. Its almost too far.

I'll keep up my search and let anyone know that is reading. If you have found any places to go climb: please post and let me know.

Asbury Park and Walnut Creek

Asbury Park is probably the most remote park in Erie Pennsylvania. It is made up of many miles of trails amidst housing developments. It is a beautiful piece of wilderness on the outskirts of town. You get there by going South on Asbury Road until you reach 38th St. Continue south on Asbury until you reach either the Asbury Park Community Center or the barn on the west side. The white barn has parking and there is also parking to the south west of the barn. This is the best place to park. There are trails leading out from there.
The trails are very well maintained but can be extremely confusing. If you happen to wander correctly through the first few turns, head towards Walnut Creek and you will be more than surprised. It is well worth the walk. Walnut creek is about a 1 to 1.5 mile walk from the trailhead. It is a small river that rides on top of a rock bed. It is beautiful stream that during the summer time could be easily walked on. There are also cliffs that line the sides of the river (10 foot cliffs) that make it very picturesque.

I plan to return in the summer as there is a nice little swimming hole on the creek trail near a bend in the river. There is also a little beach with some rocks and a little sand. A perfect little place for a little get away. There is also lots of wild life in this area. We spotted many deer and larger game tracks in the region.

LECOM, Obama, Presque Isle

I'm not sure if I have said yet, but I am a pharmacy student at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. LECOM is a pretty good school - I would say that they are a little tight in terms of how they run there operation (no drinking water in class, security passes, etc), but overall a good school with a good education. I went in and talked to a person at St. Vincent's Health center today and they said that LECOM has not been getting a lot of good publicity as of lately: something about a student with pornography on their computer or something.

It is unfortunate when any one person represents a whole body of people in a bad light. I think it is important when this happens, to try to remember and put things in perspective. For example, A-Rod has gotten caught doping: that doesn't mean that every baseball player that ever played has gotten caught doping. Likewise, not every black person loves Obama just because he is black.

Speaking of politics. I was almost shocked at how Pres. Obama was handled after he was elected. People were shouting that this was a momentous occasion and that this was a victory for black america. Being born in the west in the 80s; I find it hard to believe that there was even a time when segregation existed. Its just hard to fathom for me. So in putting so much emphasis on the fact that he is a black man that was elected - I think is sort of too bad. We should be happy that he got elected not because of so pre-determined, unalterable characteristic of his parentage, but we should be rejoicing that he was elected for who he is; what kind of person he is, not the color of his skin.

If you want to shout out that Pres. Obama is going to change the country, don't site the fact that he is black, but the fact that he has good morals and is going to do good to the community for who he is. Is it great that segregation and differences in this country has fallen to the point where a black man has been elected president? Yes it is great... but I don't think its that great because why would he NOT be elected... It just seems like a no brainer - being black shouldn't make it easier for him to be president or not - it truly should not have altered the race. And I hope that this is the case. That people did not vote for or against him merely because of his skin color.

The lake is still partially frozen. We walked out on it yesterday at Presque Isle. We walked probably 200 yards out on to it past the rock barriers. If you want to see what solid ice looks like for several feet? that is the place. Don't worry about falling in till you pass the rocks (at least we didn't have any problems with it on Monday); but do be careful if you got out.
