Snow Snow Snow

Let it snow. There has a been a lot of snow recently that has fallen. The roads here in Erie are sometimes plowed - sometimes not. When the wind blows off of the lake, you better have 3 jackets on.

We found this really great place to eat Chinese food. During lunch, you can go to this Chinese restaurant on Pittsburgh and 26th Ave. You can get a whole plate full of food for about $5. It is probably the best deal in town.

Also, if you want to catch a good movie, try the dollar theatre at the Millcreek Mall. It is now showing Dark Knight! A great deal for a buck or two.

Statins and the Cold

Well, the snow has finally started to melt. I hear from the locals that it usually snows about this much 10 times before Christmas. In other news, a preliminary report came out about statins: a type of drug that reduces cholesterol and is supposed to reduce incidence of heart attack, myocardial infarction, etc. The report suggest that even people with normal cholesterol might benefit. These are the results of just one study, and the results are not conclusive.

A Little Bit of Snow and ticks

So, yesterday it actually snowed. Not any of this hail or anything that has happened earlier. But it actually snowed. From locals I have heard that it did not really snow that much. But it was at least 3-4 inches. This is more snow than I am typically used to. So I guess I am in for a real surprise. Apparently it can dump something like 1-2 feet on a particular day of the year.

I was happy to see that here in Erie, they clear the roads fairly well and the snow was actually fairly dry - that was sort of surprising.

I also went hiking a few days ago in Erie Bluffs State Park. It isn't really a state park. They just made the area a state park and they haven't developed it at all yet. I ran into people fishing, and people hunting within about 1/2 mile. I guess that is just something that happens here in Erie, PA. I sure have never seen anything like this before where I am from. I personally thought it was ridiculous that there were fishers (with children hanging around and families) and hunters with shot-guns, and hikers, all within about 1/2 mile of each other.

I would not be surprised if there were a decent amount of accidents that happen around here. I have always enjoyed nature and wild-life. But I guess here in Erie, if I see a deer, I can enjoy it just until it gets shot!

I also got my first tick. Not the most pleasant experience. I pulled it out and it sure didn't want to leave. It left a bruise (purplish) at the puncture site. I'll be watching for Lyme Disease.

Be safe out there in Erie PA.

Barack Obama Wins

So, we all know that Obama won. 'Vote for Change'. Is it really going to be a great change. Unfortunately, in order for Obama's plan (or McCain's as well) it would take a lot of money.

Like he said, "the climb is going to be steep." He is definitely a very motivational speaker and hopefully he can fulfill what he says he will fulfill.

I was not really a strong advocate for either candidate. But I think that Obama will be able to do some good in the office. Especially since he has a democratic senate and a democratic house. He will be able to actually make some changes, something that a divided president/congress/house can't do very well.

Obama spoke about change, about breaking down the barriers between parties, about uniting the nation. I hope that he can actually do that. Because there is nothing that this country needs more, than is for good politics, good politicians, and political unity.

WallE - Dollar Theater in Erie

Last night it snowed again. My wife and I went to a Halloween party and then we went and saw WallE at the dollar theater. WallE was a very good film. We both liked it very much. It was also very political. We have noticed that many companies are starting to use kid/cartoon movies to promote political issues.

Happy feet is another one of these movies that might be promoting some political issues including environmental issues and possibly an advocacy for gay rights or other non-conventional or different beliefs.

WallE is based on a completely destroyed Earth; not destroyed by aliens or a nuclear crisis or war, but by our own pollution and filth. The main company is called "Big N Large". It was a very good movie that addressed what current issues/problems could turn into in the near future.

If you didn't know, the Erie Dollar Theater (not sure what it is really called) is found on Peach street at right around Interstate Junction (where you can get on I-79). It is found at the Millcreek Mall. It costs a dollar before 6pm I believe. Then it costs something like $2 or $1.50.

You should definitely check it out. It is a really good idea to save money but still see a movie. And most of the films are fairly empty, so you can have the whole thing to yourself (good viewing experience).

First Snow, Election 2008, and Digital scales

Yesterday, the first snow fell here in Erie, PA. Its hard to believe, but yesterday it was snowing like crazy. Thankfully, it was not cold enough to stick. It actually went from snow to rain back to snow and then to rain all day.

I walked about a mile home yesterday and got thoroughly soaked through. If you are not prepared for the winter in Erie, you better hurry. Winter is knocking on the door and wants to be let in.

On other news, the presidental election is coming back rather quickly. It was thought that Pennsylvania would be a swing state - but it is almost completely clear that it is democratic. A few days ago it was reported that Palin would make a visit to Pennsylvania (some hope it would just be Tina Fey instead). Honestly, I don't think it will matter who visits, the politician or the actor - the Republicans are not going to win.

If any of the information from the polls is somewhat correct, then there is a better chance that it won't snow again in Erie this winter then the McCain will take office.

Rain, Snow, or Sun?

So, life in Erie is just about the same as always. I seem to always wonder about the bars in this town. I'm not quite sure why there are so many? The properties of supply and demand must still be in balance, otherwise there would be more bars that are shut down.

So, the only thing I can conclude is that lots of people drink in Erie! I think that that is too bad if an entire community has this terrible addiction. Drinking is definitely not a good thing.

People die in so many ways from drinking: liver disease, car accidents, domestic violence, etc. Besides death, quality of life decreases as drinking increases. Drinking is just as dangerous as smoking, albeit in different ways.

I have a terrible fear of losing control of my faculties. What if I couldn't control what I was doing? What if I hit my wife or lost control of my car? These ramifications are not negotiable on any level.
Don't drink and especially don't get drunk. Prohibition happened in the early part of this century for a reason. It was seen as an act that should not be committed on a societal level.

I encourage you to be careful if you drink. Do so wisely.

Besides, you'll lose weight if you stop. (But remember from other posts; its not how much you weigh, but how healthy you are. A body fat scale is a good investment.)

Will there be snow?

All is well in Erie PA. It has started getting cold here in the great state of Pennsylvania. But it hasn't started snowing, not yet. But I here that when it snows here, it really snows.

I don't know if all of you guys know, but I recently just moved my business here to Erie PA. It is a store that sells scales, particularly, Digital Scales. The economy is getting tough there huh? Well, my business has been hurting a little bit as well. But we will all pull through this economic crisis together.

Did anyone watch the third presidential debate. I think Mccain got beat up. I think Obama won straight out. I am republican, but I don't think Mccain has got a chance.

Cold Weather Set in for Erie, PA

It is only October 7th. But already, the weather in Erie has turned a more bitter kind of cold.
I have been riding my bike to school regularly. Its about a 3 mile ride. Not too bad.

Today I got out of bed and rode - and I'm surprised that my hands were still attached to my body when I got to school. It is quite cold - and the little breeze that blows off of the lake turns your insides into jello.

The leaves have also started changing colors - not too much, but they are a little bit more red and yellow.

Yesterday, I was at the store and I ran into an interesting little device that checks your body fat and your weight at the same time: a body fat scale. I thought that was an interesting little device that would be very useful for those of us that are on a diet or want to know just our weight that shows up on one of those digital scales, but how much fat we are losing.

Life in Erie

So, I recently just moved to Erie, PA. Not a bad place. I'm going to just be posting my experiences and what not on this blog.

The one real reason that I was super excited for this blog is because of the movie "That Thing You Do". Maybe you've seen it, maybe not - well it was unfortunately filmed in Orange, CA - but at least they said it was here.

Too bad all of the actual locals are in california. But I still enjoy saying that I am from here.

I moved here to go to LECOM School of Pharmacy.

It is a 3 year program that has really only be around for about 8 years - but it has a decent reputation. The main reason I came here was because of the cost and also the fact that it is among the several of 3 year schools that actually seems like it is a good school.
